FAQ’s

Are Custom California Wheels high performance wheels or just for show?

Custom California Wheels are the definition of high performance. Our sine wave wheel has placed in numerous competitions, including wins at the Kongsberg Downhill and the Miami Ultraskate.

Have you done any scientifac studies on the Custom California Wheel?

The high performance aspects of the wheels have been scientifically tested against the top wheels in the industry. Speed and longevity advantages were found, registering 15% and 20% gains respectively.

Why did you name it ‘Custom California Wheel’?

The design is based on the shape of actual shark jaws.

Why are the wheels shaped like that?

David M. Patrick’s scientific discovery has led to shapes that have never been realized before. The shape is derived from shapes present in the natural world.

That is why our wheel follows the path of a shark’s jaw. When we realized the shape allows for a very wide wheel with low friction, we knew we were onto something. The wheel has all the benefits of a thin-profile wheel and a wide-profile wheel in one shape. Low friction and grip no longer have to be mutually exclusive.

What colors are available?

We have 78a Sidewinder formula in GREEN, RED, BLUE, ORANGE, YELLOW, TRANSPARENT GREEN, TURQUOISE, AND PINK. Sidewinder is perfect for all around performance. Then we have 80a Mako formula in BLACK and WHITE. Mako is perfect for high speeds and sliding.

Do you have roller skates/quad wheels/roller derby wheels coming out soon?

Actually, they are available to buy now! We have 95a and 86a wheels that begin shipping in late May 2015. The lip of the quad wheel is more traditional to fit onto the narrow quad trucks. Do you guys have trick wheels coming out?

We are planning on releasing the 54mm wheel in late summer of 2015. Sign up on our updates list to stay in the loop on new products. Also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for announcements.

Will the Custom California Wheel enter other markets, or are you only making skateboard wheels?

We plan on going into every market with a wheel. It is just a matter of time and money. From military vehicles to to wheelchairs, we want the Custom California Wheel to be identified as the only non-circular wheel in existence. We already have some licensing deals locked up, but are seeking licensing deals in luggage, office chairs, ATV vehicles, etc.

What size wheels do you make?

At the moment we only have 70mm longboard wheels. We will be releasing the 60mm wheel in the near future, followed by the 50mm and 52mm wheel. We expect to have a full range of sizes and duros for Custom California Wheels as we grow.

Are these wheels actually better or is it a gimmick?

The Custom California Wheel design is not a gimmick. We have four defined performance advantages that are generating rave reviews. The Huffington Post, The Los Angeles Business Journal, Yahoo.com, MSN.com, The Atlantic, Popular Science and many others have written feature articles declaring David M. Patrick’s Custom California Wheel as the ‘Reinvention of the Wheel’.

  1. Lightning Fast: The design allows for a thin contact patch touching the ground and therefore less rolling resistance, resulting in a quick ride. The material we use is made in California, has extreme rebound, and ranks amongst the best in the world.
  2. More grip and sliding control: The alternating pattern equates to increased control — the width is increased, but the friction is decreased! The sine wave design provides three lips per wheel for superior lateral grip. A traditional wheel only has one. When you want to slide, they break away predictably and recover easily.
  3. Multi-terrain: The sine wave pattern smoothly funnels most debris, pebbles, and dirt aside, instead of ‘steamrolling’ over it like traditional wheels. This allows for firm contact with the ground and a shockingly smooth ride. Some people have sent us reviews saying they like going over debris on purpose now instead of avoiding it.
  4. Perfect rain wheels: The alternating pattern of grooves significantly reduces hydroplaning by channeling liquid away from the surface of the wheel, allowing for a firm contact patch with the ground. Also, the rounded outer edges allow the rain to pass around the outside of the wheel smoothly, providing more aerodynamic functionality. The sine wave pattern beats the traditional grooved circular wheels in the rain wheel category for speed and grip.

Are these wheels actually square looking?

Yes.

Surprisingly, they look perfectly circular when in motion from the side and 45 degree angle view. It is not an optical illusion. The geometry of the wheel actually has sections that are completely flat. The wheels look snake-like in motion from the rear view. It is hard to understand how they can feel perfectly circular-it helps to see them in person and test them out.
